The very first Classic was a small but symbolic event — 13 Teams of 3 throwing down during a time when fitness needed a win. It was Canada Day 2021, and BC had just lifted its final pandemic restrictions. TCSC Owner Kent Aitchison had a realization: the best way to move forward was to bring people together.
He got moving and scheduled the event for Labour Day. COVID restrictions and wildfires almost disrupted things again (of course), but the team pulled it off. That first event marked the start of something bigger — a new chapter for fitness competitions in Kamloops and Western Canada.
Coming off the intensity of year one, we made two major changes: shifting from 3-person teams to Mixed Pairs, and expanding from two divisions to three (Rec, Intermediate, Competitive).
Kent almost called it a one-and-done after 2021 — but the vibe, momentum, and fun were too good to walk away from.
By 2022, more out-of-town teams started to roll in. Morning events took place at TCSC, followed by an outdoor finale at MacArthur Island Park. It was a perfect day — sunshine, no wildfire smoke, no rain. That bit of luck gave us the confidence to aim higher.
The Classic kept growing. We added a Masters division and upgraded the format: morning events at TCSC, then the second half of the day at the Tournament Capital Centre Fieldhouse.
The new venue gave us room to run more heats, elevate the spectator experience, and deliver a big-time competition feel — all while keeping the same grassroots heart.
With momentum building, the 2024 Classic made waves across Western Canada. We partnered with Project GRIT to launch their new brand, welcomed CrossFit media personality Tommy Marquez, and delivered some of our most creative programming yet.
We incorporated a true Kamloops-style desert trail run and used a shuttle bus to give athletes a “field trip” experience. With five divisions and a stacked roster, we were officially a destination event.
After two years of running the Classic at the TCC and mastering the logistics, the City of Kamloops forced a late venue change — and a two-month timeline bump from August to June. It wasn’t ideal, but it worked out better than expected.
Friday Night Lights at TCSC brought the energy. Saturday featured outdoor events, a brand-new indoor setup at the MacArthur Island Sports Complex, and finish-line races that kept the crowd fired up all day.
We debuted a new rig (delivered just in time), ran smooth logistics across five divisions, and delivered a full weekend experience — one we’re already excited to build on.
We’ve said it before — events are a lot. But every year, the payoff is worth it. New ideas are already brewing, and the next Classic will bring fresh challenges, even better experiences, and another chance to do what started it all in 2021: bring people together, create energy and excitement, and showcase the strength of both our TCSC community and the growing CrossFit scene across BC and Western Canada.
